Falmouth Department of Public Works
Challenge – Replacing outdated facilities with a functional, long-term solution
Solution – Pre-Engineered Metal Building (PEMB)
Size – 38′ wide x 42′ long
Application – Office space and maintenance storage
Founded in 1902, the Falmouth Department of Public Works plays a critical role in maintaining infrastructure and supporting daily operations throughout the town. As the department evolved, so did the need for facilities that could better support staff, equipment and maintenance activities.
Prior to their ClearSpan project, the department was operating out of a construction trailer dating back to 1988. While it had served its purpose for decades, the space no longer met the operational needs of the department. According to Peter M. McConarty, Director of Public Works, it was time for a more permanent and functional solution.
“We needed a larger building that could also be used for storing equipment and to house an open shop area,” said McConarty.
After researching prefab metal building options online, the department identified ClearSpan as the right partner for the project. Pre-engineered metal construction offered the durability, flexibility and efficiency the town was looking for, without the extended timelines often associated with more traditional structures.
The result was a 38’W x 42’L ClearSpan PEMB designed to serve as a combined office and maintenance storage facility. The new building provides ample room for equipment, improved storage capacity and easy accessibility across the site, which McConarty says have made a noticeable difference in day-to-day operations.
“The building is perfect for the operation; we’ve received many positive responses,” he said. “The room, storage and accessibility have been exactly what we needed.”
The construction process itself was also a seamless experience for the department. “There were no problems with the crew, and the building went up fast,” McConarty said. With clear expectations established from the start, the project moved forward smoothly from planning through completion.
Today, the building supplies the Falmouth Department of Public Works with a reliable, long-term solution that supports both administrative and maintenance needs. This project highlights how ClearSpan’s pre-engineered metal buildings can deliver the durability, efficiency and functional design municipalities depend on to support daily operations and long-term infrastructure goals.
